Cashmere, Vicuña & Fine Wool: A Buyer’s Fiber Inspection Guide

The luxury knitwear market is plagued by marketing euphemisms that disguise short-staple yarn blends. Understanding the micronic diameter and staple length of animal fibers is essential to selecting garments that provide generational warmth without pilling.

At the pinnacle of animal fleece sits the wild Andean vicuña. Averaging between 12 and 13 microns in diameter, vicuña fibers possess hollow internal air chambers that trap body heat with virtually zero garment weight. Because shearing is strictly regulated under Peruvian conservation treaties, authentic vicuña garments are supplied with serialized governmental certificates of origin. When touched, vicuña should feel uniquely dry, velvety, and completely devoid of the slick silicone coatings frequently applied to chemical-washed commercial cashmeres.

For pure cashmere, provenance and staple length dictate durability. Premium grade-A Mongolian and Inner Mongolian cashmere requires fibers with a diameter of 14 to 15.5 microns and a minimum staple length of 34 to 36 millimeters. Shorter fibers (under 30 millimeters) can feel deceptively soft on retail display tables due to aggressive chemical brushing, but they shed and pill excessively after only two or three wearings. Always verify whether a knit uses 2-ply yarn, where two spun threads are twisted together to counteract torsional curling and knit deformation.

When appraising super-fine wools—ranging from Super 150s to Super 200s—weave density and cloth balance are paramount. Super numbers solely denote fiber fineness, not weave durability. A Super 180s suit cloth crafted by historic Biella or Huddersfield mills will withstand daily friction only when woven with high-twist 2-fold warp and weft yarns. Discerning buyers balance high micron counts with balanced gram weights (280g to 340g) to guarantee sharp drape across changing climates.
